Hedgehog Medicine

Hedgehog Medicine

I had been finding hedgehog poo in my garden over the past few weeks, so I was delighted to have my suspicions confirmed the other day. It was the frantic barking of our one-eyed Jack Russell Gilly (named after Gillyflower in GoT) that alerted me to its presence. My husband instantly started referring to the hedgehog as ‘he’ and I immediately decided it was a ‘she,’ promptly naming her Hildegard. If you look closely at the picture above you can clearly see for yourself that we are dealing with a Hildegard and not a Hubert.

I took the picture you can see above before I let the dogs out this morning and then I took them out for a walk through the front door to not disturb our (hopefully) permanent guest who has taken up tenancy in the compost heap out back.

Hedgehogs are honoured guests indeed. In addition to having some of the less welcome critters on their menu (slugs in particular), they have the ability to make you instantly happy by just looking at them. Everyone I asked feels the same and if that isn’t a magickal ability, then what is?

On the flip side, it is equally devastating to find one flattened on the road. I once rescued a hedgehog from such a fate but only the gods know for how long…

Hedgehog Spirit Animal

Spirit animals aren’t the actual physical animals, of course, yet their magick is found in each animal too. For instance, dogs can go berserk in the presence of Hekate because of the magick in them that associates them with Her. Equally, when we start seeing or noticing an animal more often, it can be because the Spirit of that animal wants to guide us on a particular issue.

Hedgehogs have the ability to make us smile like the sun makes us smile when it comes out from behind the clouds, so it should come as no surprise that they correspond with the Sun. Hence, if Hedgehog as appeared in your life this has happened to help you experience more joy by being fully present in the moment. Other solar qualities such as vitality and fertility are also associated with Hedgehog.

Hedgehog is also associated with protection – Not so strange considered how well their spikes protect them. Hedgehog medicine can help us face challenges in a calm and grounded manner.

People with hedgehog as their totem tend to be gentle, calm and never in a hurry to pass judgement. Hedgehog people are also usually generous as well as quietly confident. Things that many people seem to struggle with comes to them naturally.

Then ancient Greeks and Romans associated Hedgehog with intelligence. They are very resourceful creatures and they also have a knack to make you want to look after them – much like cats!

Hedgehog became important to me as a Spirit Animal after a miscarriage. Hedgehog helped me keep a sense of individuality and gave me a feeling of being protected in spite of having been abandoned by my then partner only two weeks after the loss of the baby.

Have you got a special bond with hedgehogs? Is Hedgehog one of your Spirit Animals? Please share in the comments!

I”d love to see one of those in real life but we don’t have them here. Adorable.

I have never seen one in real life, but they are adorable, and the spirit association with them seems to ring true. With their gentle and unhurried presence, they do make me smile. Magickal beings, indeed.
